In this paper, we examine the relationship between the circulation of evolutionary thought among readers and the works by Henry Drummond, Benjamin Kidd and Arthur James Balfour in the late nineteenth century English and American society, particularly after the publication of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species. These three writers and their books that seemed to have influenced the devlopment of Darwin's evolutionary theory were popular among readers in general in the late 19th century. In particular, we investigate the criticism on books in The Bookman's and the Review of Reviews from 1890s to 1910s that were associated with evolutionary theories to analyse the nature of the prevalence of the 19th century scientific philosophy. |
